FAQ
Good questions, answered
Do I have to map the columns myself?
No. ColdPress reads your column headers and matches each one to the right Shopify field automatically — even oddly named ones like 'RRP' or 'was_price'. It only pauses to ask when a match is genuinely unclear, or when two columns compete for the same field, and you can override any mapping from a dropdown.
What file formats can I import?
CSV, TSV and Excel (.xlsx) — including Excel workbooks with several tabs, which ColdPress maps and imports together as one job. Drop your supplier's file in as-is; there's no need to reformat or rename anything first.
Will ColdPress overwrite or mess up products I already have?
Only if you ask it to. In Create mode it adds new products and doesn't touch existing ones. In Update mode it matches your file to products you already have (by Handle, then SKU) and updates just those — and you always see a full preview first. ColdPress never deletes products that aren't in your file. And if you pick Create but the products already exist, it spots that and offers to switch to Update, so you don't create duplicates.
What's the difference between “keep my edits” and “match my file exactly”?
Both are update modes. 'Keep my Shopify edits' (the safe default) only changes the fields in your file and merges your tags — everything else stays exactly as it is. 'Make Shopify match my file' treats your file as the source of truth, so blank cells clear those fields. Either way, products not in your file are kept, never deleted.
Can I undo an import?
Yes — every import can be reversed. Undoing a create import removes exactly the products it added; undoing an update restores those products to how they were before (prices, stock and fields reverted). You can undo right after importing, or later from your history, within your plan's window. One thing to know: images the import added to a gallery stay in place, and ColdPress tells you that on the undo screen.
Does re-importing replace my product photos?
No. When you update, new images are added to a product's gallery — your existing, curated photos are never replaced or wiped. If you want to remove an old photo, you do that in Shopify admin. ColdPress can also bind the right image to the right variant, so the navy variant shows the navy photo.
How does it handle variants like colours and sizes?
If your file lists the same product across several rows (say Navy/S, Navy/M, Red/S), ColdPress groups them into one product with its variants — not separate products — keeping your real option names like Colour and Size, across up to three options. When you're updating and your file's options don't match the product's options in Shopify, it holds those variant changes rather than risk corrupting the product, and tells you exactly why.
What happens to rows that can't be imported?
Nothing fails silently. Rows that can't be imported are set aside before anything reaches your store, each with a plain-English reason, and any product imported with a warning is flagged. You can open any import to see the details and download a CSV report to fix and re-import. The completion screen is honest too — it never shows a green 'all done' when something didn't fully apply.
Do I get to see what will happen before it touches my store?
Always. ColdPress shows a full preview before anything is sent to Shopify — exactly which products will be created or changed, honest counts that separate real changes from 'already up to date', and a panel spelling out any defaults it will apply for columns your file is missing. Nothing touches your store until you confirm.
Does ColdPress access my customers' data?
No. ColdPress only works with the product-catalog data in the files you upload. It never reads, stores, or has access to your shoppers' personal information — no customer names, emails, or orders. It's built to meet Shopify's data-protection requirements.
How large a file can I import, and how long does it take?
Row limits per import depend on your plan — see Pricing for the current numbers. Large imports run in the background, so you can close the tab and carry on while ColdPress works, then check the results when it's done.
Do I need to be technical to use it?
Not at all. There's no coding, no templates to build, and no manual column-matching. If you can upload a file and click a button, you can use ColdPress — the whole point is to make importing simple for everyone, from a first-time store owner to a seasoned merchant.
